UI SENATE APPROVES PHYSICAL RESUMPTION
On the 17th of May, Campus News reported on the approval of physical resumption for the rest of the first semester of the 2020/2021 session. The article included details on the proposed amount of fees paid, hostel accommodation capacity and the process by which new students are to check their allocated halls.
This development raised a lot of comments and concerns by the student populace especially on the subject of accommodation within the Campus and the proposed date for the commencement of the physical semester -Saturday, May 22nd. While all we have are rumours and some news articles, there has still been no official statement from the school’s administrative themselves; this development has been a source of confusion as no one seems to be sure of when and how the physical resumption will take place and what it will entail.
DEBATES ON RECENTLY RAISED RANSOM BILL
“The Senate on Wednesday considered a bill that seeks to prohibit the payment and receipt of ransom for the release of any person kidnapped, imprisoned or wrongfully confined. According to the bill, Nigerians who pay ransom to kidnappers and kidnappers who receive ransom risk 15 years imprisonment.” – As reported by The Punch News Nigeria.
The Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which scaled second reading during plenary is sponsored by Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi and seeks to discourage the payment of ransom to kidnappers as it seems to turn Kidnapping into a lucrative business. This has sparked a lot of mixed reactions as some lawyers in Lagos on Friday kicked against the proposed bill on the grounds of being inhumane by punishing the victims, while others commended the lawmakers for thinking outside the box to curb the menace.
