Organizational Profile

The University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA) is the first medical students’ Association in Nigeria and the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa and remains the best. Our history date back as far as 1948 when the prestigious premier University of Ibadan was founded, with membership strength of more than 1,200 Medical Students. The Association boasts of having produced skilled, responsible and highly renowned doctors in the continent and beyond, the likes of Emeritus Professor Akinkugbe, Emeritus Professor E.O. Akande, Professor I.F. Adewole ( Current Minister of Health, Federal Republic of Nigeria), to mention a few. One of the objectives of UIMSA is to contribute effectively to all health projects where Medical Students can be of help. We achieve this through capacity building workshop for our members as well as health sensitization outreaches/public health campaign in collaboration with Non-Governmental Organizations, affiliates, individual, etc.

Over the years, UIMSA has planned and executed several programs and projects aimed at improving the health of Nigerians. These includes Market/Street Outreaches, Symposia and Rural Public Health Campaign on several Health issues such as HIV/AIDS, Hypertension, Malaria breastfeeding, Maternal and Child health. In 2007, UIMSA in collaboration with The Federation of African Medical Students’ Association (FAMSA) and Nigeria Medical Students’ Association (NiMSA) organized a capacity building workshop for medics from all over the Nation. UIMSA in collaboration with FAMSA, Agah-Ibadan, APIN UCH, Youth-Friendly Centre University of Ibadan organizes a Programme to commemorate the annual World AIDS Day from 2009 till date. UIMSA also hold an annual Symposium which started in the year 2000 in remembrance of late Dr. V.O. Awosika during which important Health issues of National and Global importance are discussed by carefully selected Speakers. UIMSA also organizes an annual visit to the Prison inmates in selected Prisons in and around Ibadan during which relief materials are provided for the inmates. UIMSA also holds regular visit to various Homes for the Disabled and/or the Motherless during which free Medical Checkups and relief materials are provided. UIMSA also celebrates the annual World Blood Donors’ Day in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society UCH Students’ Detachment.

UIMSA has also partnered with a lot of reputable organization like Ford foundation, Association for reproductive and family health (ARFH), Health Life for all foundation, LEAP Africa, Tony Elumelu Foundation in planning and implementing programmes geared towards uplifting Mankind.
