Title Races in the Top 5 European Leagues

European League football is finally coming to a close and with only a few games left, league winners are starting to emerge. Inter Milan were confirmed champions of Serie A on Sunday as Atalanta failed to beat Sassuolo. We expect to see at least two more confirmations in top leagues next weekend as Bayern Munich and Manchester City have very healthy leads atop their respective leagues.

However, in the other two leagues, namely Ligue 1 and La Liga, the race to be champions is still hot. In Ligue 1, Lille currently sit atop, with Paris Saint-Germain, their closest competitors, only one point behind. Monaco and Lyon, currently third and fourth respectively are not too far off and are currently still in the title race. Lille are very much the underdogs here, as PSG are by far the dominant force in Ligue 1, having won the league in every season since the 2012/2013 season except in the 2016/2017 season when Monaco won it.

It’s a similar situation over in Spain, where Atletico Madrid lead by 2 points with 4 games left. It would be a disastrous season for Atletico if they end up not winning the league as at a point, they were leading by over 12 points. Barcelona, who started off poorly, have had an incredible turnaround since December and currently sit third, level on points with Real Madrid in second and only behind because of their inferior head-to-head record. Atletico still have to play Barcelona before the end of the season, in a game that could be a potential title decider. Sevilla, currently fourth, who are 6 points behind Atletico with a game in hand are also still in it.

As things stand, we have an interesting end of the season to look forward to with the title races in Spain and France, and there are also enthralling top 4 races going on in Italy, Germany, and England with clubs looking to secure Champions League football for next season
