DO VISIT AGAIN SOON

Since the electoral ban on the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA) was lifted, we have been besieged by various graphics, videos and of course requests to be addressed by the current crop of aspirants. However, one thing that strikes me repeatedly, year after year, is the very little communication we receive from our elected executives after the electoral period terminates, especially as pre-clinical students. During the last tenure, my class received only one courtesy visit and the rest…

The UIMSA elections are approaching and campaigns have begun. This week, UIMSA Press correspondents, Covenant Odedele and John Eriomala, spoke with Miss Eniola Akinnuoye, one of the aspirants for the presidential position. Enjoy! UP: The name, Eniola, is not alien to UIMSAites, and has even become a sort of hymnal recitation for the past few days. Tell us, who is the woman behind the name? Eniola Akinnuoye: Hymnal recitation? Interesting. I am Eniola Racheal Akinnuoye, a 600L medical student at…

OBEYA’S PETITION, KEY PARTIES, AND THE REINSTATEMENT OF 2K24’S VOTING RIGHTS

The Senate on Saturday passed a motion to reinstate the voting rights of the 2k24 class that were being previously exempted from the electoral process. Up until Saturday, tradition has had it that just six classes vote in any UIMSA elections. This is because the elections are meant to come before freshmen are registered and before the final year students have their final exams. The 2017/2018 tenure started many weeks after the 2k21 class resumed; the 2k21 class didn’t vote,…

A POEM FOR THE TIMES

A politician’s tongue is for kneading dough of lies into sugary cake (& according to research, people are admirers of cakes…) His mouth wears thousand promises all at once. He says he is a god, long-awaited rain, your umbrella in the hot sun, your season of peace… etc A politician is a singing serpent across the street preaching of healing “come to me, oh ye lepers & i’ll make you whole” His heart Is an aboki knife Sharper than Sango’s…

UIMSA: The man that battles his two wives yearly, Mono-candidacy and political apathy.

It has been an interesting couple of weeks since the lift of the UIMSA electoral ban. This has led to a myriad of campaigns in so many forms than has ever been seen before in UIMSA. Many may attribute this feat to the two presidential aspirants. To say that these two ladies, Ms. Jaachimma Nwagbara and Ms. Eniola Akinnuoye , are overqualified for these post will be an understatement. However, it is only natural that the more worthy you consider…

The UIMSA elections are approaching and campaigns have begun. This week, UIMSA Press correspondent, Covenant Odedele, spoke with Miss Jaachimma Nwagbara, one of the aspirants for the presidential position. Enjoy! UP: The name, Jaachimma, has become some sort of anthem in UIMSA recently. Tell us, who is the woman behind the name? Jaachimma Nwagbara: An anthem? You flatter me. I am a sixth-year medical student at the University of Ibadan. I am a Christian from Abia state (mother from Oyo…

Apathy in UIMSA

“The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment.” ~ Robert M. Hutchins The UIMSA elections are around the corner and while some positions have a number of people vying for them, most notably the presidential seat, others have no one or just one person gunning for them. This presents a problem as there wouldn’t really be any voting for the best candidate. You would…

THE VOTER’S MANUAL YOU NEVER HAD

I had waited, thinking that the match was for March, but I was wrong. I guess the ban was too heavy to be lifted then. Na so I muzz. I awoke from my slumber when I got news that the ban was lifted, and that this year was destined for ‘breaking the bias’. And since that night, I have seen flyers flying in flying colours, and I now agree that there are many banners over us. I know I am…
